Summer Learning Journey 2018-2019 Day 5-Blink and you'll miss it

Activity 1:

I don't like the fact that logging all these tree's are a good idea, have a look at the amount of paper we have now do you think we need to do any more logging at the moment. Maybe they should plant some more tree's to grow for the next time we need to cut down some more tree's. Animal don't want to go looking every week for a new home.

Activity 2:

Dear Laura

It has been a couple of weeks now. I wish you were here. It is crazy cold in Tundra and very very dry, it should start raining here not in Christchurch. I here it is very wet over in Christchurch to bad that is is not over, it is about to snow over here. My whole class has been up all the mountains they are really cool. I bet you are really jealous that you were not able to come a long with us maybe next you can come with us. We walked 5 km and 5 km back to the hut, it was really hard my feet hurt like crazy, there are a lot of new thing over here. It is better being here than Christchurch.

From your bestes  friend

  1. Hi Paris,

You have written a lovely letter to your friend Laura (I like her name, by the way!) which describes what it is like in the tundra you are visiting. It would be so chilly there, wouldn't it? I don't know if I would like to be that cold, would you?

What kinds of plants and animals do you think you might see in the tundra? It sounds like no trees can grow there so the landscape must be quite bare and sparse.

I hope you have a great day with your family today!

  2. Hello again,

You've made some good points against logging, and I really like how you've offered a solution to the problem as well - I think planting one tree for every tree we cut down is a great idea. I vote that they be native trees though. It's quite a controversial topic, isn't it? Especially when you consider the number of jobs logging companies provide, and the things we can make out of the timber. I guess we need to come up with alternative materials. Can you think of anything we could build our houses out of instead of wood?

New Zealand IS a wonderful place! I feel very lucky to have been born and raised here. It's great to hear that Christchurch is rebuilding itself - I've never been but I hear the older buildings are extremely beautiful. It would be a shame to lose them. The South Island really is gorgeous - I've only ever lived in the North Island but I've been to the South Island a few times and I love it. What's your favourite thing about living in the South Island?

    Blog ya later! :)

    Mikey
